We’ve all be away from our spouse or partner at one time or another in our lives. And falling asleep in a strange place without the familiar presence of the one you love beside you can be downright near impossible.

That’s why it warmed my heart when I heard about a project design called “Pillow Talk” from Interaction Design Student, Joanna Montgomery.

Montgomery designed Pillow Talk to keep long-distance couples connected at the most intimate time, during sleep. Each partner will have a pillow (that they rest their head on) and a chest sensor (that they wear to bed). The chest sensor  wirelessly transmits  the presence of the other partner; while the pillow communicates each partner’s heartbeat to the other in real-time.

So if you’re away from your partner this New Years Eve, maybe something like Pillow Talk will keep your heart warm and your relationship strong in 2011.
Happy New Year everyone!

Design is…

Welcome back! I hope everyone had a excellent holiday break. I know I did.

Now for a little inspirational short video from the Vostok agency, a design and strategy studio that creates smart, digital products. This short video explores what design is to renowned design thinkers like Dieter Rams and Steve Jobs to name a few.

So check it out, enjoy and let it evoke some new thoughts and ideas about design as we approach 2011. Notice the emphasis on the beauty and practicality of simplistic design. I love it!

Give the Gift of Reading…and Don’t Look Like a Last Minute Douche

If you’ve left the majority (by that I mean all) of your holiday shopping until the very last minute (and by that I mean Christmas eve) like me, then you’ll be happy to know that Netted By The Webbies is looking out for you by introducing you to Just the Right Book, a custom book service that helps you find the perfect read by asking a series of questions about the age range of your recipient ( kids, teens and adults), their reading speed (bi-monthly and monthly books), and preferred genre (favorite author, titles, television shows).

Just the Right Book memberships start at $90 for the quarterly paperback series (and if you check out the post on Netted, you can snag free shipping).

All you have to do is fill out all the relevant info, pay, and your special someone will receive a hand-written gift announcement (from you) with the first book in the series within 8 to 12 days. You come out looking like a gift-giving hero and you sharing the joy and gift of reading.

All-In-One Solution: Soccer Ball and Virtual Referee

Looking for some inspiration on a Monday morning? I needed some to! That’s when I found this awesome, tech-enabled soccer ball with it’s own built-in referee system from the Mexican studio Agent.

CTRUS (the ball) was designed to eliminate human, referee mistakes in games and took the prize at the 2010 Red Dot concept awards over the 3,000 other hopefuls. The ball contains a high-tech, sensor that lights up in different colors  to indicate referee calls—for example, when the ball goes out of bounds, scores a goal or makes a foul. The ball also contains a small camera, and sensors that measure speed and positioning for a precisely called game every time.

Check out the video to see CTRUS  in action.

Applying Happy Hour to Social Media

I know I usually provide a fabulous video for Fridays, but I just couldn’t resist this post from Netted by the Webbies in the spirit of the weekend. So cheers, here it goes…

If you like to socialize over a few bevies with friends, then Bartab is your app.

Bartab lets users send and claim real drinks and try out new establishments by sending $1 drink vouchers via Facebook. All you do as the sender is log into Facebook and select a friend from your contact list to send a drink to. You will then be shown a list of local partner bars to select as your watering hole. Drinks cost senders $1 and they redeem $1 from the recipient for each drink as well. And users can conveniently add funds through their My Account page by supplying Mastercard or Visa information…just like a bar tab.

Your friend will get a posting on their wall or via text to alert them to the fact that “they’ve got new beer”! No, not really that, but wouldn’t that be freaking HILARIOUS! Just remember, drinks need to be redeemed within 90 days of sending.

Currently, the Bartab app is available for the iPhone in New York, Los Angeles and San Fran, with Android and Blackberry compatibility, as well as expansion to other cities coming soon.

12 Days of MFX — A Year In Review

We thought we’d do something a little different and a little more festive with this month’s newsletter. So in keeping with Christmas tradition we thought we’d take a classic and put together a 12 days of our own, including all of the things MFX Partners(TM) had to celebrate about in 2010. Happy Holidays!

1. New Staff

The year 2010 brought a lot of fresh faces and new talent to MFX Partners.
Our team welcomed:
Alison DeMuy Director of Client Partnerships, Anna Fleet Copy Writer, Lisa Grogan Account Director, Neil Lippert Designer, Robert Miniou Accountant

2. People

Our tag line is “Passionate, Creative People”, and we believe it adequately represents MFX Partners and the people that bring life and passion to this company and the work we do here everyday. That’s why we are big on celebrating the personal milestones as well as the professional. Congrats to:
-Our designer James on buying his new home
-Our Account Director, Lisa and her family on the arrival of baby Celia
-Our Accounts Payable, Ying and her family on the arrival of baby Miranda
-Our designer Lesley Drago (née Richardson) on her marriage

3. New Space @ the Tannery

MFX Partners has outgrown our space at 72 Victoria Street South in Kitchener, but we really like the neighborhood so luckily we’ve secured a space right across the street in Kitchener’s Tannery District. We are excited to be part of this new working community that will not only be great for the growth of the downtown Kitchener core, but for MFX Partners as well! We hope to be all moved in by February 1, 2011 and will update you on our contact information at that time.

4. Community Involvement

In June, MFX Partners sponsored the 2010 Art Awards, and we were joined by the community to celebrate Kitchener-Waterloo’s most distinguished and inspiring artistic talents at Kitchener’s Centre In The Square. The awards celebrated 22 years of artistic achievement in our community in 12 award categories featuring Literary, Visual Arts, Performing Arts, Music, and more in the K-W Region.

In September, MFX Partners got aboard the Steel Rail Sessions to contribute some moving art and Design Thinking to this collaborative art event…on the Waterloo Central Railway train! Dine & Design featured culinary art by Nick & Nat’s Uptown 21 and a look at Design Thinking by MFX Partners with an inspirational wall of Post-it notes where passengers were encouraged to write about what would improve our community. Pretty cool huh? Woot! Woot!

5. Staff Events

Building strong connections is such an important part of the work we do at MFX Partners, so that’s why we try to get together and have fun as much as possible. Our annual Best Ball Golf Tourney brought out some healthy competition, some really interesting fashion, good laughs, and, of
course, a lot of unmentionable cursing. The winning team got bragging rights for the entire year and a free lunch that the rest of the group “conveniently” forgot about and never shelled out for. But, for the next week we expanded our minds and our flexibility with a little Yoga at Studio Energy in Waterloo, and we started another frightfully, fun tradition with a pumpkin carving contest that had the cutest judge of all!

6. Good Deeds

In May, MFX Partners created The Good 50, a game that aims to inspire new, positive ways of living as part of the DESIGN 21 Game Challenge. The Good 50 deck reacquaints players with positive behaviours by showing us that it’s easy to live cleaner; treat others (including ourselves) with more respect; and it forces us to rethink the world around us.

Movember (the month formerly known as November) was pretty hairy around the MFX Partners’ office. Our male staff fully embraced the moustache growing charity event that helps raise funds and awareness for prostate cancer.

7. Design Thinking workshops

This year MFX Partners embraced and unveiled our own Design Thinking method, a
creative problem-solving approach that helps answer real world problems and real people
needs. We introduced our method with a collection of half-day, full-day, and multi-day
hands-on workshops where we introduced Design Thinking strategy and how it can be
used to help businesses really understand their customers and make innovation easier and
truly meaningful.

8. MFX Successes

This year we landed some of our largest projects ever! One of our most fulfilling and
challenging was helping to create a Culture of Innovation at a well-known Fortune
50 Company. MFX Partners is currently working with this client, challenging them to
think in new ways to find solutions to overcome innovation barriers.

9. Growth Spurt for Design Changes

The year 2010 brought sizable growth for our studio company, Design Changes, in not-for-profit
and community-based clients from our own Waterloo Region. We are proud of our work with
the Hospice of Waterloo Region, Beyond One Eighty, City of Kitchener, and the many talented
tech companies we’ve had a chance to work with from the Accelerator Centre.

10. Interns

This past year gave us the opportunity to expose some bright, young minds to MFX Partners as
we welcomed graphic design students, Rachel, Delaney and Joan. And we worked closely with
CoreCulture’s Company intern John Z. on the rebrand of 17muscles™ and Cognition™. They
learned stuff from us; we learned stuff from them. Talk about a win-win situation!

11. 17muscles/Cognition

Our sister company, CoreCulture, has had much success with their custom, digital training
platform…so much so, they decided to spin it off into it’s own company. MFX Partners led the
rebrand of this product, and helped them introduce 17muslces, the new company name, along
with Cognition, the flagship product that helps companies build connections with people by
capturing valuable knowledge using custom, digital content.

12. Axes & Antlers

As the year nears its end and the first snow fell, some would say the creative team slowly lost
their minds and could be found roaming the woods posing as lumberjacks and deer…in way,
way too much flannel. Pure creative genius? Insanity? Who really knows! The concept might
have been a little avant-garde, but the shots we captured were sure something else. We’ll let
you decide what that something else is, but regardless it was a lot of fun and a really nice
lady made us yummy muffins.

*New Find: MFX Archives Revived!

As we began packing, in anticipation of our move to our new location at the Tannery in the
New Year, we uncovered the remnants of an old photo stuck to the underside of an antique desk
in John and Rebecca’s office. Who could these fearless adventurers be? When was this photo
taken? And what does it have to do with MFX Partners? We have a feeling the New Year holds
some answers for our staff. More to come in our next issue…

Why Getting Sketchy Has Merit

A few weeks back, I posted on the Importance of Keeping a Journal and how documenting life’s moments can encourage creative and personal development. Well consider today’s post, inspired by graphic designer Jason Santa Maria, an extension of that idea. Dare I say one life’s moment (me running across his post) inspiring another (me posting this one).

His post, Pretty Sketchy, shares the merits of keeping a sketchbook, and like my own post on keeping a diary, solidifies that you don’t need to be an artist to keep a sketchbook; just like you don’t have to be a writer to keep a journal. Both are about being good thinkers.

Santa Maria even pledges to share his own drawings in the spirit of awareness via his Flickr page, and leaves us with this bit, which I loved: “We should revel in not caring how good or bad we are, and by knowing that we hone our creativity with each stroke of the pencil.”

So what are you waiting for! Check out his drawings, get inspired and start doing instead of just talking about it…

What Makes Your Day?

I dub today “Feelgood Friday”.

Why? Because this cute little animated video submitted to the 2010 Adobe Design Achievement Awards by UK design student, Napatsawan Chirayukool, totally made mine—sugarpuffs and all!

It doesn’t surprise me that this two-minute, hand drawn short topped the animation category with it’s short snippets from people celebrating the everyday things that make them smile—everything from seeing your partner first thing in the morning to having a cup of tea (that whets my whistle too).

Chirayukool took the $3 000 prize for her efforts, which in my opinion inspire some positive design tips and some positive thinking. So watch and enjoy!

Happy Friday!

Does Simplicity = Customer Loyalty?

Leonardo Da Vinci said, “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.”

But is the same true for innovative product design?

Customer Loyalty & E-Marketing Event Project Manager, Eugene Schoen performed a study that found that simple innovations that make life easier most definitely equate to customer loyalty.

He points to the Apple iPad and iPhone as perfect examples of this user-friendly product philosophy. These devices makes browsing the web, checking emails, managing your calendar, accessing social networks like Twitter, Facebook or Linkedin a breeze from a single app-based, touchscreen device. Suddenly folks can use this one device to help them stay organized and improve their quality of life—be it online shopping, paying their mortgage and bills, booking travel, staying in touch with friends and business contacts—all from this one device and in an instant.

So what’s your take? Do smartphones, tablets and etc., make our lives easier or more difficult? I’ve heard both sides of the argument. And, more importantly, do they create loyalty around the brands that provide them?
